Equipment & Fabrication

Built to make the part, and get to the railcar

When a hard-to-get part could not arrive fast enough, we started making it ourselves. The shop floor at Mt Pleasant is set up to fabricate, repair, and dispatch. So a railcar spends less time waiting and more time earning.

In-House Fabrication

Hard-to-get parts, made on site

The fabrication department was created in direct response to supply chain issues. Rather than let a railcar sit while a part crossed the country, or never shipped at all, we invested in the machinery to cut, form, and finish those parts ourselves.

The result is a shop that controls its own timeline. A part that used to be a bottleneck becomes a work order.

In-house fabrication turns a supply chain problem into a same-shop job.

CNC Plasma Table

Precision profile cutting for plate and structural steel, driven from a program rather than by hand.

Baykal 132-Ton Press Brake

Heavy forming and bending capacity for the kind of plate work railcar repair demands.

Edwards 55-Ton Iron Worker

Punching, shearing, and notching in one machine for fast, repeatable fabrication.

DoAll Vertical Band Saw

Clean, controlled cuts for stock and shaped work across a range of thicknesses.

Grizzly 3616 Milling & Drilling Machine

Milling and drilling for the machined features a fabricated part needs to fit right.

Clausing Metal Lathe

Turned parts and finishing work when a component has to be made to tolerance.

Cross-Reference

Fabrication backs the parts inventory

Over $1,000,000 of the most common railcar parts sits in stock, ready to fit. The fabrication department covers the rest. The uncommon parts, the discontinued parts, the ones a fleet cannot afford to wait on.

Between the two, most jobs never stall for want of a component.

Mobile Truck Kit

Every service truck carries the shop with it

When railcars cannot come to the facility, the facility goes to them. Each mobile repair unit is a fully equipped service truck. Safety gear first, then the tools to do certified work on site.

  • Blue Flags and Wheel Chocks for track safety and lockout on every job
  • Full personal protective equipment for the crew
  • Welders, cutters, and grinders for structural repair in the field
  • Automated Brake Testers for certified air brake testing on location
  • Hydraulic and electric jacks for controlled lifting
  • Wedge Press units for the heavy-fit work a mobile job can call for

Crews travelled three hours to return roughly 600 stored railcars to service in a single engagement. Proof that a mobile unit is a working shop, not a stopgap.

Automated Brake Testing

An early adopter, on purpose

True Rail was an early adopter of Automated Brake Testing. The technology speeds up a critical step, records results consistently, and holds to the S-486 Air Brake standard we are certified against.

It runs at the Mt Pleasant facility and on the mobile trucks alike, so a brake test is never the reason a railcar sits.
